BPIF Launch Graduate Management Programme

The BPIF launched its Graduate Management Programme for professionals in print and media on the 30 of April at The Tower - A Guoman Hotel in London. 160 learners attended the day event which was deemed a success by all. Ellis Watson, CEO of DC Thomson & Co Ltd and motivational speaker, urged all learners to be ‘just that bit better and enthusiastic, dynamic and candid in the workplace’. Learners were introduced to their mentors and the programme was explained in detail.
BPIF celebrates print apprentices on London Eye

Michael Johnson goes ‘back to the floor’ for National Apprentice Week
As part of this year’s National Apprentice Week (1 - 5 February 2010), British Printing Industries Federation (BPIF) Chief Executive, Michael Johnson is becoming an apprentice for one day. On Monday 1st February, Michael is swapping jobs with Christopher Head (pictured at work), who is currently an apprentice at Pepper Communications in Plymouth. In his naval days, Michael ran the Devonport Naval Base.
Michael will be heading to Plymouth to take on Christopher’s duties at Pepper Communications, working alongside the team that trains Christopher on a daily basis. This will include an introduction to bindery operations and running a Heidelberg Speedmaster 74 printing press.
Guidance is today being published to inform employers about the new right for employees to request time for training.

The guidance for employers is being made available through Business Link and is being published 12 weeks before the right comes in on 6 April 2010.
Guidance is also being published today on the DirectGov website to inform employees about how they make a request under this new right.

Entries close on March 31 for this year’s BPIF Educational Scholarships. Twelve Scholarships to the value of £2500 each are available to young people aged 16-30 to help fund their their education and training in pursuit of a career in the UK printing and graphic arts industries.
The Scholarships, now in their fifth year, are sponsored by the British Printing Industries Federation, Unite the Union and the Printers’ Charitable Corporation. PCC And Unite once again join the BPIF in co-sponsoring vital help for young people in our industry.
Joint sponsors BPIF, PCC and Unite the Union announce the launch of the 2008 BPIF Educational Scholarships programme designed to assist young people in funding education and training in pursuit of a career in the UK printing and graphic arts industries.
The Scholarship Scheme comprising 12 awards of £2500 each is open to all young people aged 16-30 who are resident in the UK. Applications are made in writing on official application forms and a shortlist is then invited for interview.

In 2001 the DTI recognised that only 20% of directors and managers running the UK printing industry had received any management training. In the last three years, Vision in Print has also experienced that a lack of suitable supervisory skills are preventing companies from fully exploiting the benefits of lean manufacturing and process improvement.. Without good management our industry will never be able to realise its full potential.
Pre-budget report slim for UK businesses but Leitch report vital for training

There was not a lot for most UK business, let alone print, in the Pre-Budget Report. A stable macroeconomic outlook was announced to date. There were no shifts on corporation tax or business rates however there was an increase in landfill tax and fuel costs. It all equated to another; steady as she goes; offering from the PM-in-waiting it did not even go as far on environmental measures as expected.
95% of BPIF Training customers would recommend programmes

BPIF Training's bi-annual survey of apprenticeship trainees and their employers show that 95% of employers and 89% of trainees would recommend the courses to others. In addition 93% of employers felt that the training programme delivered the skills that their businesses required.
Adult learning inspectorate (ALI) names BPIF as one of the leading training providers in the UK.
