Rankin raises funds for care workers with latest photography publication
- ‘Embrace’ showcases a new series of the renowned photographer’s artworks created during lockdown, with all proceeds going towards The Care Workers’ Charity
- The publication marks another creative collaboration between Rankin, design agency SEA and leading paper manufacturer Fedrigoni
London, 19 April, 2020: Renowned photographer Rankin has unveiled his latest publication, ‘Embrace’, a series of images created during lockdown that reflect on isolation through the photography of decaying flowers. Designed by creative agency SEA and printed on premium Fedrigoni materials, the publication aims to raise funds for The Care Workers’ Charity in support of an often-overlooked group of essential workers.
Rankin commented: “Self-isolation gave me the opportunity to take a step back and reflect on the disconnectedness we were all feeling. For the first time in over 25 years, I was truly alone with my camera. The pandemic prevented me from capturing my usual subject matter - people - and provoked an entirely different artistic approach. Drawn to the flowers in my garden, I found myself shooting them like portraits, giving them personalities to bring them to life. I’ve always photographed people, so ‘Embrace’ marks an entirely new chapter in my portfolio.”
Renowned for his portrait and fashion photography, Rankin’s still life photographs of flowers in ‘Embrace’ are a notable change in direction. Capturing the loneliness that many have felt during the pandemic, each image contrasts darkness and separation with a sense of strength or hope. Away from his London studio, Rankin found a way to embrace both being and working alone, using natural imagery to act as a cypher for the wider world. ‘Embrace’ also includes images of the photographer in his personal studio creating the project, illuminating his artistic practise and creating one of the most revealing portraits of Rankin to date.
Recognising that people are yearning for tactility and connection during lockdown, Rankin decided with his long-term collaborator Bryan Edmondson, founder of SEA, to publish the photographs in a physical book. The publication was a way of creating an intimacy between Rankin and his audience, bringing the images alive in a way that digital photographs alone could not do. To juxtapose the subdued context, they named it ‘Embrace’, a nod towards a more optimistic future where people can embrace their loved ones once again.
Beyond a striking representation of the emotional impact of lockdown, the publication’s core aim is to raise funds and awareness for The Care Workers’ Charity, providing urgent support grants for care workers who are shielding, self-isolating, or unable to work. Among the lowest paid workforce in the UK, care workers provide essential support to those most vulnerable to the coronavirus, whilst also facing their own financial and social challenges during the pandemic.

The arresting impact of Rankin’s photographs were further elevated through the use of UV lithographic printing provided by TEAM, which allows the ink to dry instantly and produces an exceptionally bold finish.
‘Embrace’ is a continuation of Rankin, SEA and Fedrigoni’s creative coalition, which also includes the biannual Hunger Magazine. Dedicated to celebrating the innate creative drive that can enact cultural change, Hunger features Rankin photographs under Edmondson’s creative direction, and printed on Fedrigoni materials.
‘Embrace’ is now available for purchase at all major retailers, and the Spring 2021 issue of Hunger Magazine is scheduled to be released in May.
