WINNERS OF THE 2024 BRITISH BOOK DESIGN & PRODUCTION AWARDS ANNOUNCED
The BPIF is delighted to announce the winners of the 2024 British Book Design & Production Awards, held at the stunning De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in London on Wednesday 29 January.
There were 95 beautiful books on this year’s shortlist across 17 categories, and The Folio Society were the outright winner of the awards, finishing at the top of five categories including Photographic Books – The Planets; Scholarly, Academic & Reference Books - On the Origin of Species; Best Jacket/Cover Design, The Underground Railroad; Best British Book - Nineteen Eighty-Four and also the coveted prize of Book of the Year for the same title. The judges agreed it was “a worthy winner” and said that “the book conveys astounding finishing, beautifully bound, designed and mesmerising illustrations that capture the feel of the book, with all aspects setting new heights”.
We are always looking to inspire fresh talent in the industry, and our ever-popular student category was won by Roisin Scott from the National College of Art and Design, who took home the trophy for her creative book ‘You have just been diagnosed with ADHD’.
The guest host for the evening was Anita Mangan. She has designed/ illustrated nearly 100 books including two of her own: Bingo, An Illustrated Guide to Bingo Lingo and The Chinese Zodiac, A Seriously Silly Guide. She has created 5 best-selling children’s books, with 2 more releasing this year, including one for World Book Day, entitled The Fart That Broke World Book Day. Anita was well-placed to host an evening in celebration of the design and craft of physical books.
Charles Jarrold, The Chief Executive of the BPIF started the evening off with a brilliant speech. He went on to say that last years’ UK book publishers saw sales of an immense £1.8 billion and that 80% of the revenues came from physical printed book publishing, rather than digital delivery! He later stated that a collaborative spirit materialises because of the existence of books and Charles stressed the importance books have upon challenging perspectives, increasing human engagement and spreading knowledge across the world.
After the awards celebration, each guest received a copy of the stunning Book of the Night, designed by EN-TE and printed by Halstan on high quality paper by Fedrigoni, which this year followed the event’s theme of ‘Finishers’ with a striking ‘Finish’ cover by Diamond Print Services. which showcased the shortlisted and winning books – a collection of all the talent of all this year’s finalists.
The BPIF would like to thank this year’s judges, as well as the supporters and sponsors without whom the Awards wouldn’t be possible – BookMachine, Canon, Diamond Print Services, Fedrigoni, Halstan, Intelligent Finishing Systems, Muller Martini, Oxford Brookes University, Printing Charity, The Bookseller and Winter and Company.
And once again, a huge congratulations to all this year’s winners and finalists.
