Neil Coyle MP visits FE Burman, Print and New Media
Neil Coyle, Labour MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark on 9 February visited FE Burman in Southwark. He joined management and staff to tour the site, learning how a modern print and media business works and contributes to both local and national economies.
FE Burman specialises in communications solutions, including design and print and employs 40 people at its premises on Crimscott Street, having been in business for almost 60 years.
Staff discussed their day-to-day work, advanced technology in the industry, the impact of Brexit and local development.
The UK is the world's fifth largest producer of printed products, with 8,600 companies across the UK employing 122,000 people.
Neil Coyle MP said: "From newspapers to birthday cards - and of course MPs' campaign leaflets - print is a big part of our lives. It was fascinating to discover how a print business works, to find out more about how the paper products we take for granted actually involve so much hard work at the printer. But there's a lot more to it. Companies such as FE Burman are the backbone of our local and national economy, employing local staff and providing high quality customer service and products.
"The Government needs to do everything within its power to make it easier for businesses to start, grow and prosper and I will always be a strong advocate for the interests of small and medium-sized businesses like FE Burman."
Michael Burman, Managing Director, said: "We were delighted that Neil came to join us and to tour the premises. It was a brilliant opportunity to show him how the industry works and is moving forward. We discussed how companies like ours - and the small and medium business community- could be better understood by Government and helped towards future success.
"Visits like this really show politicians that print is very much a live and kicking industry, making a significant contribution to the UK economy, as well as here in Southwark."
