Why you need job evaluation in your business
While defining job roles and pay rates sounds simple enough, for many companies, this process can actually be incredibly complex and time-consuming.
What happens when you have people complaining about unfair wages in your business? What happens when one of them is a woman and claims sex discrimination because you are paying the man next to her £100 per week more for doing the same job? Where do you place a new job in your pay system and how can you compare its value against all of the other jobs? How can you have a fair and open pay system?
The answer to these questions and more is to have a job evaluation (JE) scheme. "No!" I hear you say, "I've heard how all that does is let all the employees expect a pay rise; anyway, it's too expensive and complex to set up."
A job evaluation is an analysis of the various jobs performed in a company that systematically determines the relative importance of each. The goal of the evaluation is to have a uniform, fair and objective method for evaluating pay and performance. HR departments often look to expert consultants to provide an outside, objective view and do the leg work to create a compliant, analytical scheme.
Job evaluation is not that expensive and as a member you get access to help from the start from your HR Advisor team. It's not complicated and it's not a licence to print wages. What it can do is help you defend any equal pay claims, see where there are gaps in your pay structure; help you build and maintain a new, fairer pay structure and allow you to understand the relative value and importance of all of your jobs.
