How to compete with people

How to compete with people

People are what make your business unique, they are one of your most valuable assets, but many businesses lack a strategy to ensure that they are obtain and retaining the highest quality candidates.

At our recent Members' Day, Kevin Green former HR Director at Royal Mail spoke about the ‘perfect storm', where a business has a lack of labour and a lack of skills and talent, which some companies can experience if they do not put in place a correct people management strategy.
Below are a few handy tips and observations we picked up from Members' Day that could help with your strategy:

Observations
• Growth of flexible working helped many sectors including ours where we want to reduce fixed costs and increased variable costs to flex against revenue patterns. Circa 66% fulltime versus 34% flex-time make up the jobs market.
• People are more likely nowadays to have multi-phased career
• Working for 60 years to become the norm

Tips
• The need to reskill and learn is important in a multi-faceted career
• Employers need to Brand the job opportunities to attract the best
• The engagement process to pull though the best needs adapting
• Give people the compelling ‘why' they should commit emotionally and be engaged at work and they will achieve a lot for you - only 30 % of work force say they are actively engaged at work!
• Productivity correlates with engagement
• What motivates and engages people at work - sense of autonomy, purpose and mastery of job
• Focus on people's strengths
