Inprint Issue 27
September/October 2011

There’s good news about survival this month – and a fair bit about politics too.

First the survival. Halstan Printing Group, as you can see from our profile on page 14, is not far off celebrating its centenary. A centenary that is all the more remarkable in that its speciality to begin with was music printing – hardly the kind of thing that would sustain it today, you would think. Yet with a shrewd programme of acquisitions and moves into new markets, the company has stayed as resilient as ever. It has even managed to take on a couple of other firms – one very recently – whose future looked uncertain. No wonder this year its chairman Chris Smith, who has been the driving force behind much of this development, was given a BPIF Outstanding Contribution to the Printing Industry award. He thoroughly deserved it.

Then there is the launch of PPM, the organisation that used to be known as YMP. It’s clear that many people had lost all knowledge of what that abbreviation stood for and as a result, interest in what had originally started as a mentoring and networking group was waning.

Well, now we have YMP rebranded as PPM, and if the feedback I have got from the first event is anything to go by, the relaunch has been a great success. You can read all about it on page 16.

And so to politics. There is a whole raft of new legislation in the air, including the Bribery Act, which we explain on page 7, and the up and coming introduction of new pensions, which we cover on page 6. But it’s not all bad news. In fact, the Government is committed to reducing the amount of red tape businesses like yours have to put up with, and we want to help them do it. Find out how you can get involved on page 4.
