The Napo series of films are produced in computer graphics and feature characters in the world of work, faced with safety issues, although positioned in a light-hearted way.

The main character and hero, Napo, and his colleagues express themselves in wordless language, symbolising an employee who could be working in the print and packaging sector.

Because the Napo films are language free, it allows people of all backgrounds and cultures to understand and identify with the character, from workplace operatives to senior management alike.

In the films, Napo often finds himself the victim of common situations over which he has no control, highlighting the hazards that can exist in the workplace. But he can identify hazards and risks and provide practical solutions or make suggestions to improve safety and work organisation. In this sense he is an ideal employee as he is actively involved in the risk assessment process.

Because Napo is a cartoon character he can explore areas that would not be possible in drama or documentary films. He is indestructible and everlasting, unlike the workers we are trying to protect. WHEN STRESS STRIKES

CATEGORY – TAKING RISKS AND STRESS

Stress at work accounts for a high percentage of lost working days, and the number of people suffering from stress-related conditions is increasing.

Napo identifies some of the causes of stress at work in his traditional humorous style including excessive demands, low control, constant pressure, unacceptable behaviour, lack of respect, change, bad planning and contradictory instructions which lead to errors, fatigue, burnout, exhaustion and poor performance.

Psychosocial risks at work can be successfully managed, and managing risks improves the wellbeing of workers and the performance of companies. The key is prevention. The film is designed for all work environments and is intended to open up discussion about some of the most difficult issues facing workers, managers and supervisors.

WORKING TOGETHER

CATEGORY - BEHAVIOURAL SAFETY CULTURE

All is not what it appears as the factory owner gives a media interview about the production and safety records of the company. On different levels, unsafe work practices, a failure to follow procedures and poor communications contradict her message that safety is a priority.

'Working together' addresses two issues in prevention: culture and behaviour. It emphasises that by working together, managers and employees can create a safer, healthier and more productive workplace based on a collaborative approach to improve safety culture - 'the way we do things around here' - the way in which safety is managed in the workplace.

Managers are leaders; effective leaders demonstrate their commitment by their actions. They promote occupational safety and health and lead by example; they are visible and aware of key issues. They are respected and trusted by the workforce because there is open communication and dialogue. They give recognition when things are done well and are decisive if things go wrong. Worker involvement is a two-way process where managers and employees talk to one another; listen to one another's concerns; solve problems, and share views and information

NO LAUGHING MATTER

CATEGORIES - SLIPS AND TRIPS; MAINTENANCE; ACCIDENT PREVENTION

Slips and trips are one of the most common hazards and cause tens of thousands of accidents in the workplace every year.

Most slips occur in wet or 'contaminated' conditions, and are due to poor housekeeping. The solutions are often simple and cost effective. A suitable assessment of the risks should identify the necessary controls which include prevention of contamination, management of spillages, suitable footwear, workplace design, maintenance, appropriate flooring, good housekeeping, and effective training and supervision.

This film, which is suitable for all sectors and all levels of employees, seeks to promote good practice and emphasises that slip and trip accidents are 'No laughing matter'.

LUNGS AT WORK

CATEGORIES - PASSIVE SMOKE, LUNG FUNCTION

Exposure to smoke is bad for both smokers' and non-smokers' health. It can cause serious problems such as cardiovascular and respiratory diseases.

It can cause death due to cancers, coronary heart disease or stroke. Yet thousands of workers may still exposed to tobacco smoke.

In this short clip, Napo makes his own unique contribution to the cause of smoke-free workplaces.

SAFE MOVES

CATEGORIES - WORKPLACE TRANPORT; HOUSEKEEPING; ACCIDENT PREVENTION; MANAGING RISKS

The focus is on workplace transport. Central to the film is the fork-lift truck alongside other forms of internal and external transport.

The film includes scenes about site safety, people safety, vehicle safety, maintenance, visibility, reversing, and loading/unloading. It is suitable for all workers but especially for new employees and young workers.

The main theme of the film is that transport in the workplace must be well organised and well managed. This requires planning, implementation and monitoring by senior managers, risk assessment to identify hazards and risks, and the need to take appropriate action. It also requires appropriate behaviour from employees who should be properly trained and well supervised, and a cooperative approach so that risks are reduced and hazards are properly managed.
